It lays the groundwork for some possible future romance between two of the characters in the sequels, but that’s all. I mean, there comes a point in this book where the girls are learning some fine point of social manipulation, and you really can’t tell if it’s in service of catching a husband, or in service of lining someone up to stick a knife in them. The books in the series become more mature as the characters age, however. Its quirky style will draw you in! Gail Carriger’s writing style is sort of a weird thing to explain. This book never quite asked me to take this stuff seriously, so I was able to roll along with it and just enjoy every joke. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign up.

This school turns out to be a great place not only to learn etiquette and espionage, but a place of self discovery and emotional development. Especially with a name like that. So I got about a third through this book. I certainly learned a lot of etiquette just from reading this spectacular book.

It is funny, frivolous and frothy. I needed to brace myself if that was the case None of that in this book. One of my favorites is when Sophronia inexplicably claims that werewolves enjoy the theater. Tea should be required for the reading of all Gail Carriger books, don’t you think? It is also a place to learn what makes the people around her tick, which in turn leads Sophronia to learn more about her own inner workings and a bit of wisdom.
Honestly, I’m just so impressed with myself that I read and liked a steampunk book.

It will probably appeal etiqueette a female and teen audiance somewhat more that others as that seems to be the “target audience” but it’s a fun book and I can recommend it as a light read. She has her own style, though I must admit that it is not my favorite for it is kind of simple and, espiobage my opinion, this would have been better with a 1st person POV. I picked this book up at my local Dollar Tree store.
Mar 14, Whitley Birks rated it it was amazing Shelves: Of course, being taught knife fighting by a werewolf is a bit more to the point, if indelicate. The author seemed to want to make her seem strong and intelligent but there was always something she said or did that made me see her otherwise.
Sophronia learns the finer points of deceit, espionage, and assassination while attending Mademoiselle Geraldine’s Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality. Sadly 14 year old Sophronia does not fit in. Recommended for a light summer read around the pool and, hail, you may want to read The Parasol Protectorate series first, starting with Soulless.
